Look down into a spring nobody has found the bottom of
Blue Eye
In 6 months
The Blue Eye is a spring in the hills of southern Albania, and a slightly ridiculous one. Water comes up out of a hole in the ground at more than eighteen thousand liters a second, clear enough to see a long way down and blue enough to look edited, going darker over the hole itself. It is the start of the Bistricë, which runs on from here to the Ionian Sea south of Sarandë.
It is a little over an hour by road from Gjirokastër, the first stop of the last full day, before Butrint and the coast.
The edge of the pool is a wooden rail under the trees, and the looking down is the whole activity. Divers have been to fifty meters. They have not found the bottom.
The spring has been protected as a natural monument since 1996.
