Sleep in a mountain hut at the end of the road
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
In 8 months
A road climbs to 2,333 meters under the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, three towers of rock in the Dolomites, and stops at a mountain hut. A night in the hut means not driving back down it.
The afternoon drive comes up from Misurina, and then the vehicle leaves without anybody in it. The hut is shared rooms, a long dinner and everyone in the same fleece, with the peaks outside the window.
On a clear evening the rock turns pink around sunset. The Ladin word for it is enrosadira, and everybody has a go at pronouncing it. Bed is early, because the walk around the peaks starts before the sun does.
The toll road ends at the hut at 2,333 meters, and the tallest of the three towers, the Cima Grande, is 2,999 meters high.
