Walk through a gorge of green water on wooden boardwalks
Vintgar is a gorge 1.6 kilometers long, cut by the Radovna River, with walls of gray rock 50 to 100 meters high. The way through is wooden: walkways and bridges that follow the river and cross it, over pools of green water.
It runs one way only, downstream from the visitor center to the exit at the Šum waterfall, and the helmet is compulsory against loose rock. Walking it the wrong way costs a €50 fine, so nobody turns back for a second look. In summer it opens at eight in the morning, as early as anybody is let in.
It has been open to visitors since 26 August 1893, two years after the mayor of Gorje, Jakob Žumer, and the photographer Benedikt Lergetporer explored the rest of it. The walkways and bridges went in that year, and the best-known stretch of them is still called the Žumer Galleries.
