Climb a tunnel inside a mountain to a tomb on its summit
Njegoš Mausoleum
In 7 months
Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, prince-bishop and poet, asked to be buried on top of Lovćen, the mountain above the Bay of Kotor. He was, and his mausoleum now runs the length of the peak at about 1,660 meters.
The road out of Kotor climbs the wall of the bay in about two dozen hairpins and keeps going up the mountain. The last part is on foot, inside the rock: a tunnel of 461 steps, the one real climb of the week.
It comes out at the top with mountains on every side and the sea on one, and the tomb standing on the summit it was promised.
Njegoš built a chapel on the peak in 1845 and was moved there after his death. The mausoleum that replaced the chapel was designed by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović and finished in 1974.
