Walk across a bridge one of its own engineers helped blow up

The bridge over the Tara canyon in northern Montenegro opened in 1940: five concrete arches, 365 meters end to end, about 170 meters above the river.

It is a short drive from Žabljak, out of the mountain town and down to the canyon rim, and the bridge carries the road straight across.

Walking it once the story is known is a strange, quiet few minutes. The canyon underneath runs about eighty kilometers and is about 1,300 meters deep at its deepest.

In 1942, with an Italian army taking the bridge, partisans blew up one of its arches, helped by Lazar Jauković, one of the engineers who had built it. He was caught, and the Italians executed him on the bridge. It was rebuilt in 1946.
