Eat oysters in sight of the beds they grew in
Cancale
In 6 months
Cancale is a harbor town on the Brittany coast, a short way west of Mont-Saint-Michel, and it farms oysters. The beds lie in the bay below the town, and at low tide they come out of the water in long dark rows.
The oyster market is on the harbor and sells local oysters at producer prices. On this trip lunch is a plate of them, eaten on the spot.
The beds are in plain view from the pier, so the oysters on the plate and the place they came from are in the same look.
The beds cover about 7.3 square kilometers, and farming oysters is still a major activity in the port.
