Walk down to the first lighthouse in the Azores

Farol do Arnel stands on a ledge below the cliffs at Nordeste, at the eastern end of São Miguel, with nothing in front of it but the Atlantic. It is considered the first lighthouse built in the Azores, and it has been lit since 1876.

The road down to it is too steep to drive, so the way there is on foot: about 500 meters, downhill all the way, toward a small fishing harbor at the bottom.

At the bottom is the lighthouse, and the sea, and a moment to sit before the climb back. The walk up is short, and it is the steepest thing on the trip.
