Climb a stair with one step for every day of the year
The Calvari in Pollença is a stone stair of 365 steps, one for every day of the year, climbing from the old town up a hill to a small chapel at the top. It is a street as much as a stair, with houses along it and tall cypresses lining the way.
It starts in the historic center, a short walk from the Plaça dels Seglars, and goes up without a break. The upper steps are older and lower than the ones below, which the knees notice in a good way.
At the top is the Calvari church, and from in front of it the view opens back over the roofs of Pollença to the foothills of the mountains and, farther off, the bay.
On Good Friday the stair is the route of the Davallament: a figure of Christ is taken down from the cross in the chapel and carried down all 365 steps by torchlight, in silence, to the parish church.
