Go down into a cavern made of salt
Salina Turda is an old salt mine at Turda, and its chambers were dug out of the salt itself: walls, ceiling and the floor underfoot, striped where the layers fold.
The way down is by stairs and a panoramic elevator, into chambers lit by rows of hanging lamps.
The Rudolf chamber, with its elevator tower, is 42 meters deep and has a sports field and an amphitheater at the bottom. Lower still, the Terezia chamber drops 112 meters to an underground lake with an island of salt in the middle, and a boat can be rowed across it. There is also, for some reason, a Ferris wheel. It is exactly as strange as it sounds.
Salt mining at Turda was first documented on 1 May 1271 and ended in 1932. The mine opened to visitors in 1992 and again, modernized, in 2010.
